Winter Solstice

I am curious about personal celebrations and rituals. Is it a grand day for you or low key? Do you have a tradition that must be experienced every year? I love hearing stories about winter celebrations of all sorts.

A friend once hosted a great solstice ritual==part of the ritual, we tied bright ribbon to a an evergreen wreath. As we tied our ribbons we each told stories-thoughts-special memories that were important to each of us. As part of our energy building we lightly held the wreath flat and rotated is as we chanted. After the ritual the host hung the wreath on his door to welcome all winter visitors.

Take a moment to share a story or thought.
Bright blessings

  • I try to do something with light, of course ... especially in the form of fire. I have a backyard fire kettle and, after calling the directions, have lit it on the winter solstice, both when alone or circling with friends.
    • i agree... i love to bring fire into many of my rituals...

im cooking for 60 people that day but will do something next day. im sure to have some horned element to my take on things...

i dont always follow a ritual plan or even "pagan festivals" i find i work when i feel the need or im called to work...
i may mark a seasonal change at an unseasonal time... non-climate elements aside, to be honest with global warming im increasing taking a more fluid approach. spring blooms at the sametime as holly berry is very confusing!

One of the best things I ever did was with a group of people who had gathered for the Solstice. After sunset we each took a lighted candle in a glass jar and went in procession into the nearby woods. We put the candles down in a clearing and each went separately out into the darkness of the surrounding trees....as far as we dared! The idea of course was to experience the darkness before turning towards the renewal of light. No one got lost, and afterwards we came back indoors and had a feast.

This year I'm going to the Faery gathering at Featherstone Castle in Northumberland.
